Mahi Mahi Burgers with Chipotle-Avocado Spread
Nothing completes a barbecue like a perfectly grilled juicy burger. When it comes to juicy burgers, beef is not your only protein option. These days you can make burgers out of many different meats and even veggie burgers. You can make burgers with turkey, chicken, salmon and more. Now you can add Mahi Mahi to that list.
I got the inspiration to make Mahi Mahi Burgers after finding some at Trader Joe’s. They caught my attention but when I read the ingredients I wasn’t too thrilled to try them. In fact, I never did try them. So instead decided to make my own homemade ones. With fresh and clean ingredients.
I also wanted to add a fun and tasty spread to go with these Mahi Mahi Burgers. A delicious spread that would complete these burgers and make them the envy of all the beef burger eaters. Every bite of these burgers is a burst of flavor. These have become our go-to cookout burgers everyone loves!
Ingredients needed to make Mahi Mahi Burgers:
- Mahi Mahi– Fresh works best but you can use previously frozen mahi mahi too.
- Blanched Almond Flour– Adds moisture to the burgers and structure.
- Spices and Herbs– Fresh cilantro, pink sea salt, paprika, cumin.
- Aromatics– Garlic and yellow onion.
- Coconut Aminos– Adds depth to flavor.
- Fresh lime juice– Elevates flavor.
- Dressing– Mayo, chipotle chili crushed, avocado, fresh lime juice, cilantro, pink sea salt and pepper.
Equipment needed to make Mahi Mahi Burgers:
- Food Processor– To combine all ingredients together to then form the mahi mahi burgers.
- Grill or Griddle– These mahi mahi burgers can either be grilled or pan fried.
How to make Mahi Mahi Burgers with Chipotle-Avocado Spread:
- Step 1– Start by cubing mahi mahi filets and placing them in a food processor bow. Thinly dice cilantro and measure out 2 tablespoons. Mince garlic and dice onion. Add to food processor bowl along with the rest of ingredients for mahi mahi burgers. Pulse until all ingredients are well combined.
- Step 2– Scoop out mixture into 4 even parts and roll them into balls. Shape them into burger patties that are about 4-5 inches wide and about 1/4-1/2 inch thick. Set them aside.
- Start 3– Preheat grill or griddle on medium-high heat. Drizzle a bit of oil on surface. Place patties on heated surface and grill burgers for 2-3 minutes. Flip over and continue to grill for another 2-3 minutes on opposite side. Set aside.
- Step 4– Place all ingredients for the spread in food processor bowl (make sure bowl is cleaned up from making burger mixture); mayo, crushed chipotle chili , avocado, fresh lime juice, cilantro, pink sea salt, and black pepper. Pulse on high until well combined and creamy and smooth texture is reached.
- Step 5– Serve Mahi Mahi Burgers while still warm in burger buns with Chipotle-Avocado Spread and any preferred burger fixins. Enjoy!
Tips and Substitutions:
- Chill the burgers for a while– This will help them get firm and prevent them from falling apart when grilling.
- Preheat grill for at least 10 minutes before grilling the burgers– This will prevent the burgers from sticking on the grill.
- If using a griddle- Make sure to grease it with oil and bring griddle to a heat before you add your burgers to cook.
- Substitute for mayo- Use pain Greek yogurt.
- Substitute for Flax Meal- Use blanched almond flour.

These mahi mahi burgers are super versatile. You can serve them as a traditional burger in a hamburger bun. You can also wrap them in lettuce and make a lettuce wrap instead. Mahi Mahi burgers on the grill or in the oven:
Mahi mahi burgers are great on the grill as it gives them a smokey flavor and nice chard. You can also pan fry them and they are just as juicy and tasty. You can also make them in the oven, however to be honest, I’ve never made them this way.
Meal Prepping it:
Since these Mahi Mahi Burgers are freezer friendly you can make them ahead and keep them in your freezer. This is a great way to use them as part of your meal prep. I always like to double the recipe and make two batches. I make some for us to have that same day and another batch to freezer for later.
How to store your Mahi Mahi burgers:
To store your burgers place them in an airtight container and keep them refrigerated for up to three days. These Mahi Mahi Burgers are also freezer friendly. Make them ahead and keep them frozen as part of your freezer stash. They can be frozen up to one month.
Can you freeze Mahi Mahi burgers?
Yes. I would just recommend freezing them if you used fresh mahi mahi as opposed to previously frozen. The taste will be altered once thaw-out after being frozen so fresh fish works best for this. To freeze mahi mahi burgers place them on a baking sheet pan then place in the freezer. Once burgers have frozen, transfer them to a freezer bag. Keep mahi mahi burgers frozen for up to 2-3 months.

For Mahi Mahi Burgers:
- 12 oz Mahi Mahi
- 1/2 cup blanched almond flour
- 3 cloves of garlic
- 1/2 yellow onion
- 2 tbsp fresh cilantro
- 1 tsp pink sea salt
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp cumin
- 1 tbsp coconut aminos
- 1 tbsp lime juice
- 1 tbsp olive oil
For Chipotle-Avocado Spread:
- 1/2 avocado
- 1/3 cup mayo
- 1 tbsp chipotle chili crushed
- 2-3 tbsp fresh lime juice
- 2 tbsp fresh cilantro
- 1/2 tsp pink sea salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
