Ingredients needed to make Homemade Turkey Burgers:

  • Ground Turkey– Use ground turkey that is at least 93/7 so that the patties will hold and not get crumbly.
  • Aromatics– Green onions and garlic.
  • Spices and Herbs– Fresh parsley, dried oregano, dried thyme, pink sea salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, and onion powder.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar– The acidity in acv helps get rid of that turkey aftertaste. It also adds flavor to the patties.
  • Coconut Aminos– For a nice umami taste that adds depth to flavor.
  • Olive Oil– For cooking.

Equipment needed to make Homemade Turkey Burgers:

  • Large Mixing Bowl– To mix the turkey meat in with the rest of ingredients.
  • Spatula– For flipping turkey burgers.
  • Grill Pan with Ridges– You can also use a regular cast iron skillet or a griddle.
  • Large Baking Sheet Pan– I like to place my turkey burgers on a sheet pan as I am prepping them for cooking.
  • Parchment Paper– To line baking sheet pan.

How to make Homemade Turkey Burgers:

  • Step 1– Start by thinly dicing green onions, mincing garlic and thinly chopping parsley. Add ground turkey to a medium mixing bowl. Add prepped green onions, garlic, and parsley. Drizzle apple cider vinegar and coconut aminos, and add spices; salt, pepper, smoked paprika, onion powder, oregano and thyme.
  • Step 2– Mix ground turkey with all of the spices and herbs making sure they are well incorporated into the meat. Divide into 8 equal parts and shape into patties about 1/2 inch thick.
  • Step 3– Preheat olive oil on a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat for a few minutes. Place the first 4 patties on the heated surface and sear patties for 4-5 minutes. Flip over and sear for another 4-5 minutes. Place thermometer in the middle of each patty and it should register at 165 degrees F. Remove patties from skillet and add the other 4 patties. Repeat searing process.
  • Step 4– Serve patties immediately on burger buns or lettuce wraps with preferred toppings. If you have any leftover patties place them in an airtight container once they are completely cooled off. Keep refrigerated for up to 3-4 days.

Tips and Substitutions:

  1. Serve immediately- Turkey burgers taste so much better right off the heat. Any leftover burgers allow to completely cool off. Place in an airtight container and keep refrigerated for 3-4 days. Reheat on skillet for better taste.
  2. Preheat skillet– Place turkey patties on a preheated hot surface. This will prevent them from sticking to the skillet.
  3. Use thermometer to take internal temperature- Stick thermometer in the middle of each burger. It should read 165 degrees F once they are done.
  4. Try grilling them!- Rub patties with a bit of olive oil on each side. Preheat grill on medium-high heat and grill each patty for 4-5 minutes on one side.
  5. Don’t skip the ACV- Apple cider vinegar helps neutralize the after taste turkey meat tends to have. It will also add flavor to your burgers.
  6. Substitute for apple cider vinegar– You can use lemon or lime juice.
  7. Substitute for coconut aminos– Use some tamari sauce.

Homemade Turkey Burgers serving ideas:

Homemade Turkey Burgers FAQ’s:

Can I make homemade turkey burgers in advance?

Yes you can make these patties in advance. Line a container or baking sheet pan with parchment paper and place the patties over it. Cover patties with Saran Wrap or lid and keep in the fridge. Because Turkey meat is lean, it will stick to the parchment paper. Carefully remove them when ready to cook. You most likely will have to reshape them a bit.

How can I tell when homemade turkey burgers are done?

Use a thermometer and place in the middle of each patty once they have been cooked through. It should read a temperature of 165 degrees F once they’re done.

How do I keep homemade turkey burgers from falling apart?

I make homemade turkey burgers all the time and have never had any problems with the falling apart. The trick is in using ground turkey that is at least 93/7. If you find that your turkey burgers are crumbling, add some mayonnaise. Mayo is a great binder and will add flavor to your turkey burgers.

Can you grill these homemade turkey burgers?

Yes. You can certainly grill these homemade turkey burgers. I suggest placing them in the fridge for at least 20-30 minutes before grilling them. This will keep them from sticking to the grill.

Meal Prepping it:

Homemade turkey burgers are great for meal prep as they are so versatile and can be served in many different ways. While these are great served as a classic burger in a bun with lettuce and tomatoes, they can also be served as a great protein when meal prepping. Make these ahead and keep them for quick lunches or dinners for the week. You can make burger bowls with these or even make a simple meal with some rice and a veggie on the side.

Storing and Reheating:

Place any leftover homemade turkey burgers in an airtight container. Keep them refrigerated for up to 4-5 days. Reheat by placing back on stovetop or in the microwave.

Freezing Homemade Turkey Burgers:

Turkey burgers can be prepped and frozen. You can either freeze them uncooked or cooked. Either way, place pieces of parchment paper in between each patty to prevent them from sticking to each other. Place them in a freezer bag and keep frozen for 3-4 months.
