Baked Sweet Potato Fries

I have been making these Baked Sweet Potato Fries for a many years. They’re very popular now but I started making them before all of this millennial/hipster foods became a thing. Since everyone for the most part has had them or at least heard of them by now; I never thought to post the recipe here on the blog.

The thing is that while making sweet potato fries is a very easy process, getting them to a crispy texture while baking them is not as simple. Well it is simple. However, not a lot of people take these extra steps to get them that way.

So I will share with you my secret to getting these fries nice and crispy. Now I must be honest with you guys, this process will take a little while longer than just chopping up fries, coating them with some seasonings and letting them bake in the oven. I say this because if you’re planning on making them allow yourself some time to prep them and not as a last minute snack or side dish.

Ingredients needed to make Baked Sweet Potato Fries:

  • Sweet Potatoes– Any kind of sweet potato or yams will do.
  • Spies and Herbs– Paprika, dried parsley, garlic powder, ground turmeric, pink sea salt, cayenne.
  • Avocado Oil– Or coconut oil.

Equipment needed to make Baked Sweet Potato Fries:

  • Large Baking Sheet Pan– To bake the sweet potato fries on.
  • Parchment Paper– For lining baking sheet pan with.
  • Large Mixing Bowl– For soaking sweet potato fries in.
  • Small Mixing Bowl– To mix the spices in.
  • Whisk– To mix the spices together.
  • Spatula– For tossing and serving the sweet potato fries.
  • Vegetable Peeler– For peeling sweet potatoes.

How to make Baked Sweet Potato Fries:

  • Step 1– Start by rinsing and scrubbing your sweet potatoes. Then dry them thoroughy. Peel and cut your sweet potatos lengthwise. Slice each side into about 1/4-1/3 inch thick sticks just like fries. Place fries in a large mixing bowl and fill with cold water. Allow to sit soaking for at least 20 minutes (see note).
  • Step 2– Drain and rinse fries. Gently, pat dry each fry one by one with a paper towel. Dry thoroughly making sure each fry is completely dry.
  • Step 3– Preheat oven at 400 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Spread out fries on baking sheet pan. Drizzle fries with avocado oil making sure all fries are well coated with the oil.
  • Step 4– In a small mixing bowl, whisk together all spices until they are combined well; pink salt, paprika, dried parsley, garlic powder, ground turmeric and cayenne peppper (if using).
  • Step 5– Sprinkle seasoning mixture over fries. Give fries a good toss making sure all fries are well coated with seasoning. Place in oven and bake for 25 minutes. Remove fries from the oven. Using a spatula carefully flip fries. Place back in oven and bake for another 12-15 minutes. Do 15-18 if you like them very crispy.
  • Step 6– Change oven from bake to broil setting on High and broil fries for 1-2 minutes. You can skip this step if desired but it definitely helps get the fries even crispier.
  • Step 7– Serve sweet potato fries while they are still warm with your favorite dipping sauce like ketchup or fresh guac! Enjoy!

Tips for making Baked Sweet Potatoes Fries:

  1. Soak sweet potato fries in cold water as long as possible- Leaving sweet potatoes in water for a while extracts most of the starch. The longer you leave them in water the more starch it gets rid of. This allows the sweet potatoes to get crispier once they are baked.
  2. Pat dry each fry one by one- Like this you will make sure all fries are dried thoroughly getting rid of all the moisture. This too will allow your fries to get crispy while they bake.
  3. Let them bake for a few extra minutes if you want them really crunchy- After flipping the fries, place back in oven and bake for another 12-15 minutes. Do 15-18 if you like them very crispy.
  4. Broil if desired- This will help get them pretty crunchy too. This step is great to add if you didn’t have much time to soak or dry the fries before baking.

How to serve Baked Sweet Potato Fries:

You can serve baked sweet potato fries as a side to any dish you would serve regular fries with. I love having them with a side of guacamole for dipping as a snack or appetizer. I also love serving them with some chili poured over them for some homemade chili fries.

What to serve Baked Sweet Potato Fries with:

Variations:

  1. Make them cajun fries– Sprinkle them with some cajun seasoning for a kick.
  2. Make them sweet– Sprinkle them with some cinnamon and coconut sugar to make them sweet.
  3. Turn them into taco fries– Season them with taco seasoning, bake them and top them with your favorite taco toppings like taco meat, pico de Gallo, guacamole, cheese, etc.
  4. Turn them into chili fries– Top them with your favorite chili like our turkey chili or pumpkin chili and turn them into chili fries.

Baked Sweet Potato Fries FAQ’s:

Why won’t my sweet potato fries get crispy?

The starch in the sweet potatoes won’t let them get as crispy as you’d like. Especially of they are being baked rather than deep fried or air fried. If your sweet potato fries don’t come out crispy is because you skipped the process to remove most of their starch.

Why do you soak sweet potatoes before baking?

Soaking sweet potatoes then rinsing them gets rid of most of their starch. This will allow the sweet potato fries get nice and crispy when they are baked.

How do you make sweet potatoes easier to cut for fries?

Sweet potatoes can get a but tricky when cutting into ling strips to turn them into fries. A good trick is to cut a small section from the bottom of the potato lengthwise. Then placing it flat on your cutting board. This will allow you to get a better grip on your sweet potato and cut them into fries.

Storing and Reheating Baked Sweet Potato Fries:

If you have any leftover baked sweet potato fries, place them in an airtight container. Keep them refrigerated for up to 4-5 days. Reheat by placing back in the oven. You can also reheat them in the microwave, however this will change their texture and make them much softer.

I am so glad you explained not only the “secret steps” (soak then dry) but also the reasoning BEHIND them – that will make me less likely to skip these steps/plan appropriate time to do this recipe right! Yum!
