Weekly House Chores Schedule

Organization was one of the goals I set for myself as part of my New Year’s Resolutions. I consider myself to be an organized person for the most part. I like having a planner, making to-do lists and any other checklists, and making a daily schedule for myself. However, this year I wanted to take my organizational skills to the next level.

As some of you may know by now being a stay at home mom was not something I had anticipated. It was a decision my husband and I had to make and do what was best for our daughter. As someone who used to have a full time job it was easy to have a daily routine. I would meal prep, get all my stuff ready the night before, go to work, come home have dinner, go to the gym then wake up the next day and do it all over again. It was pretty easy and I had a pretty good flow going.

Dealing with House Chores as a Stay at Home Mom:

Since my husband and I both used to work full time we would split the house chores. Typically we would do the cleaning on the weekend and since it was both of us splitting the work we did it pretty quickly. Now as a stay at home mom I do take care of most of the house chores since I’m home with our baby.

My husband does do his part and takes a few chores himself when he sees something needs to be done. I am very grateful for that but to be honest I rather do it myself (lol). I’m just the type of person who has a method for everything and feels like the only way it will get done the way I want is if I do it myself. I know that’s not a great quality to have but I just can’t help it!

Struggling to stay on top of the house chores:

When I officially became a stay at home mom I was in a rut. The lack of routine had me feeling lost and I didn’t know where to start. I constantly felt like the house work was falling behind and my house was a constant mess. Which drives me crazy! I would spend a long time cleaning just for everything to go back to looking like a tornado hit it just a few minutes after.

I started to realize that I was pretty much just winging my daily chores and even though I was cleaning I wasn’t getting anywhere. I would make a daily to-do list and schedule of what needed to be done but I would always concentrate on the same stuff and put off others. This would just end up having other work keep piling and then eventually I would have to get to that and end up with twice the work.

Creating a Weekly House Chores Schedule:

I decided that I needed a weekly chore schedule. This way I would designate a day for a specific chore. Like this I would never fall behind in any specific area. I took into consideration what activities I have to do during the week and worked my chores around those.

The days that my daughter has dance or any other activities I try to not give myself to many chores. I also wanted to designate a specific day where I took care of meal prepping or food prepping to get that out of the way. Like this I wouldn’t have to deal with the hassle of cooking dinner every day or not knowing what to cook.

Monday- Clean Fridge, Groceries, Meal Prep, Laundry:

Monday’s are my day to clean out my fridge, wipe it inside and out, do groceries and meal and food prep. I decided Monday was the best day for me to start off with a clean fridge and stock up on groceries. Sunday night before I go to bed I make my meal plan for the week. I write down what I’m going to make for breakfast, lunch and dinner and what fruits I want to stock-up on to use for snacks.

Meals that I can make in large batches are my usual go to’s. So on Monday after I make my meal plan, I also recheck my pantry and fridge to see what staples I need to restock on and make my grocery list. I deep clean my fridge inside and outside and head to the grocery store.

When I come home I cook and do some food prep as well. I chop up veggies and fruits that I can keep in the fridge in mason jars for the rest of the week so that it’s easier for me to cook with or use as snacks. This is the day that I also try new recipes for the blog. I try to make 1-2 recipes a week and Monday is my day to do this. This way, I also use that as part of our meals for the week. In between doing all this I also throw in a load of laundry.

Tuesday- Sheets, Towels, Bathrooms:

Tuesday’s are a busy day for me because it’s the day my daughter has dance class and we also head to the library for story time. Then we get home and it’s lunch time then nap time. So I keep this day a simple one when it comes to chores. I quickly clean the bathroom, throw our sheets in the washer, put fresh sheets and before we head to dance the sheets are ready to go in the dryer. The trash bins are brought into our droveway later on in the day because the garbage trucks don’t come by until later on in the afternoon.

Wednesday- Deep Clean and Laundry:

This is technically my cleaning day. I dust everything in the house, furniture, cabinets, doors, cubbies, baseboards, etc. I also sweep every room in every floor very well. I move furniture, rugs, etc and sweep right under. I also put in a load of our laundry which I do every other day.

Thursday- Living Room Cleaning:

Thursday is a pretty easy cleaning day too. I vacuum all of our area rugs and couches. I also wash our throws and comforters on this day. Quick and easy!

Friday- Mop, Laundry, Bills/Finances:

Friday’s I throw all bathroom rugs to wash plus another load of laundry. I do a quick sweep and then mop every room and floor of the house. Then I sit and take care of the finances. Budgeting, pay bills, etc.

Daily Chores- Morning, Mid-Day, Evening:

In between all of these main chores there are also things that I do on a daily basis to help keep the house tidy. Taking these daily steps helps keep the house relatively clean and organized. This makes the big chores much simpler and quicker to be done.

Keeping all the rooms clean and picked up makes it easier to sweep and mop on the days I have assigned those duties to. I don’t have to take the time to pick things up and put them away before I start to clean. It safes so much time!

My cleaning routine may seem like a lot but it’s really not. To some of you it may even seem like it’s not enough. The point is that it’s all about what works for you. Keep your daily chores to not more than 4-5 things on a daily basis. Do small things that help keep the house organized so that cleaning is much easier.

My cleaning routine takes me no more than 20 minutes. Wednesday’s since it’s my deep cleaning day it takes me a bit longer but no more than an hour. The small tasks I do on a daily basis have become second nature so it only takes me a few of minutes to do them. Cleaning the kitchen after dinner is probably what takes me the longest every night but that’s also no more than 20 minutes.

Depending on what your daily routine is make a Weekly House Chore Schedule around it. Here are some tips:

  1. Do you have activities you need to bring your kids to? Appointments? Do you work full time?
  2. Remember to not give yourself too many chores in one day. Keep it simple.
  3. List small daily tasks to help keep the house tidy.
  4. Make sure you meal prep or food prep and making a grocery list is a must too.
  5. Assign a day for finances too since this helps to keep a peace of mind and won’t keep you from doing your other chores because you forgot to pay a bill.
  6. Give yourself a day or two that you don’t worry about chores or any house work. As you may have noticed, I don’t assign myself any chores on the weekend. I keep those for family time and fun activities to do together as a family. I do still pick up at the end of the night a bit to keep the house organized. However, I don’t worry about it as much as I do during the week.
