Red Velvet Overnight Oats

Over the past few years Overnight Oats have quickly become my go-to breakfast. Always have loved them and make them on a regular basis. As my life has gotten more hectic my need to save time has increased. Overnight Oats always come to the rescue and make life a lot easier. So glad to have learned how to make these a few years back.

Since Overnight Oats are a staple in my home and we have them regularly, it only made sense to start experimenting with different flavors. As much as we love them in our house, we’re all the type of people who get tired of having the same thing everyday. By trying different ways of making this amazing breakfast we keep it fresh and don’t get tired of it. Even though essentially we pretty much are eating the same thing regularly.

Not only are these great for adults, they’re also great for kids. Overnight oats are perfect for babies and toddlers since they’re easy to both chew and digest. These Red Velvet Overnight Oats are great since they have a bit of beets in them. The chocolate comes from raw cacao which is a superfood loaded with antioxidants and other nutrients. Chia seeds are another superfood rich in protein and omega-3’s. All essential for a baby’s growth and development .

Red Velvet Overnight Oats FAQ’s:

What type of oats to use to make Overnight Oats:

To make these Red Velvet Overnight Oats (or any other overnight oats for that matter) you want to use old fashioned (rolled) oats. Make sure they’re gluten-free too for better digestion. Oats are naturally gluten-free but some facilities that also pack other types of grains or foods may get the oats mixed in with gluten. Using quick oats for overnight oats doesn’t work well either as they come out way too mushy. They essentially get “over cooked”.

Using natural sweeteners in your Overnight Oats:

When it comes to my Overnight Oats we prefer them to be sweet. Anything with chocolate seems to always be a win. While we like them to be sweet we don’t like them to be over sweetened. Natural sweeteners like honey, and maple syrup are always my go-to’s.

Are Oats Overnight actually healthy?

Yes. Overnight oats are very healthy. They are an excellent source of protein, fiber, and other vitamins and minerals. Especially since you can mix them with so many other healthy ingredients such as fresh fruit, nut butters, nuts, veggies, etc. Overnight oats make for a nutrient-dense breakfast and a great source of energy.

What not to add in overnight oats?

Don’t add toppings to overnight oats until the next morning. Extra toppings will soak into the oat mixture and can change the texture and overall taste of the oats.

Natural Coloring with Beets:

The red color in these is obtained by using beet puree. This can be a great way to sneak in some veggies for your picky eaters as well. It doesn’t have much beet in it so you can’t taste it at all. The chocolate and sweetness definitely overpower the beet purée flavor.

The great thing is that you get a pretty colored breakfast without having to use any artificial food colorings or dyes. Colorful food also can get kids more interested in trying the foods you’re serving them without a fuss and liking them. Introducing different colors to you baby from a very early age will help them grow to appreciate all sort of healthy and colorful foods. Have some leftover beet puree? Meal Prepping it:

To meal prep these Red Velvet Overnight Oats is really easy. Roast or boil a small beet ahead of time and put through a food processor or high speed blender to make a puree. Add a bit of water if you need to get a nice smooth texture. Then mix your dry ingredients in mason jars. The night before just mix the dry ingredients with the beet puree, milk and maple syrup. Super easy!

Storing Red Velvet Overnight Oats:

Keep your red velvet overnight oats in a mason jar tightly sealed. Keep your overnight oats refrigerated for up to 2-3 days.
