Sautéed Garlic Butter Mushrooms make for a flavorful and delicious side dish. Garlicky, buttery mushrooms sautéed until soft and fragrant. All you need is 15 minutes to get this tasty dish ready.
Sautéed Garlic Butter Mushrooms
I’m all about side dishes that are both tasty and easy to make. This Sautéed Garlic Butter Mushrooms is just that kind of side dish. It comes together in 15 quick minutes and only calls for a handful of ingredients. It pairs up with any other dishes like steak, roasted chicken, roasted turkey (hello Thanksgiving), mashed potatoes and even pastas.These garlicky, buttery mushrooms are so flavorful, soft and fragrant. They are so good and will quickly become your go-to side dish!
Ingredients needed to make Sautéed Garlic Butter Mushrooms:
- Cremini Mushrooms– Or any preferred mushrooms.
- Garlic Cloves– They add so much flagrance and flavor.
- Spices– Pink sea salt and black pepper.
- Unsalted Butter– You can use salted if that’s what you have, adjust salt accordingly to prevent mushrooms from being too salty.
- Fresh Thyme– For garnish.
Equipment needed to make Sautéed Garlic Butter Mushrooms:
- 12 Inch Cast Iron Skillet– Or any non-stick pan.
- Spatula– For stirring mushrooms are they cook.
How to make Sautéed Garlic Butter Mushrooms:
- Step 1– Clean mushrooms and slice each mushroom into 3 slices. Mince garlic and measure out butter.
- Step 2– Place a 12 inch cast iron skillet on a stovetop and turn heat to medium-high. Add butter to heated skillet and allow it to start melting for about 30-45 seconds. Toss in minced garlic and sautee for 1 minute.
- Step 3– Toss in mushrooms and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Continue to sautee for 6-8 minutes until mushrooms are cooked through. Use a spatula to occasionally stir mushrooms making sure they are cooking through on every side.
- Step 4– Serve immediately and garnish with fresh thyme if desired.
Tips and Substitutions:
- Use other type of mushrooms- Portobello mushrooms are a great substitute since they are full grown versions of cremini (baby Bella) mushrooms. White mushrooms also make for a great substitute.
- Only have salted butter?- You can use salted butter if that’s all you have. Just omit the salt until the end. Taste mushrooms and add salt to taste.
- Sprinkle some grated parmesan cheese over– and it brings this side dish to another level!
- Serve as a side– to steak or roasted chicken. Also great to serve over some pasta and top with grated parmesan cheese.

These sautéed garlic butter mushrooms are so good, I can eat a whole bowl as a snack. They make for a great side dish for virtually any other foods or meals. These are so good served with some scrambled eggs for breakfast. In a sandwich, quesadilla, or over some pasta for lunch. As a side dish to chicken, fish, beef, shrimp, etc for dinner.

Variations:
- Make them vegan friendly– Substitute butter for a plant-based butter or olive oil.
- Add some spiciness– Sprinkle in some red pepper flakes for some added heat.
- Use herbs– Add in a handful of fresh parsley or thyme for some added flavors.
- Make them cheesy– Sprinkle in some freshly grated parmesan cheese for a cheesy flavor.
- Add more veggies– Sauté with some red bell peppers, red onions, zucchini, baby spinach, etc.
- Mix in some sauces– Add in some tamari sauce, coconut aminos, Worcestershire sauce etc.
- Drizzle some fresh lemon juice– For some added zest.

What are Cremini Mushrooms?
Cremini Mushrooms are also knows as “baby bella” mushrooms or “baby portobello” mushrooms. This is because that’s exactly what they are. Baby version of Portobello Mushrooms. Cremini mushrooms are dark brown, small mushrooms with a smooth rounded cap. They are similar looking to white button mushrooms but firmer than these. When purchasing cremini mushrooms, look underneath their cap. If the gills are covered, this means they are fresh mushrooms.
How do you get the most flavor out of sautéed mushrooms?
Season them well. Adding some basic spices and herbs goes a long way. Simply by adding some salt, pepper, garlic and butter, your sautéed mushrooms will be so flavorful. Also, leave some space between each mushroom slice as you sauté them. This will allow them to get a nice brown and get a bit crispy on the edges. If they are too crowed, they well steam instead.
How do you clean mushrooms?
You definitely don’t want to wash your mushrooms with direct water. Mushroom soak up water wish will then make them turn soggy as they cook. Instead, use a mushroom brush to bush any dirt off. I then like to wipe them with a damp paper towel to clean make sure there isn’t any residue left.
How do you know if cooked mushrooms are bad?
The best way to know if cooked mushrooms are gone bad is by smelling them. If they have a moldy smell to them, they have definitely gone bad. If they have a slimy, moldy and soggy texture, those are also signs that they have gone bad.
Storing and Reheating:
Place any leftover sautéed garlic butter mushrooms in an airtight container. Keep them refrigerated for up to 3-4 days. Reheat them by placing them back on stovetop or in the microwave.
