Healthy Homemade Fudgesicles

As a kid Fudgesicles or Fudge Pops were a staple in our home during the summer. There was nothing like playing outside for hours then coming in for a fudgesicle and enjoying that chocolaty, fudgy, creamy, frozen treat!

Unfortunately, classic store-bought fudgesicles are packed with so much sugars, preservatives, additives and so many more not so good ingredients. These Healthy Homemade Fudgesicles are much cleaner and made with just six simple ingredients. They’re packed with nutrients, healthy and just as creamy, chocolaty, fudgy and delicious as the store-bought ones! One might say even tastier. Make these delicious fudge bars to enjoy this summer!

Ingredients needed to make Healthy Homemade Fudgesicles:

  • Full Fat Unsweetened Coconut Milk– You want to use full fat coconut milk as it makes the fudgesicles creamier.
  • Chocolate Chips– I like using dark semi-sweet chocolate chips.
  • Cacao Powder– You can also use unsweetened cocoa powder.
  • Maple Syrup– Adds sweetness.
  • Vanilla Extract– Adds flavor.
  • Collagen Peptides– Optional but it makes the fudgesicles creamier while adding protein and other nutrients.

Equipment needed to make Healthy Homemade Fudgesicles:

  • Medium Sauce Pan– To melt and mix the ingredients in.
  • Whisk– For whisking the ingredients.
  • Popsicle Mold– I like using a silicone one as it makes it easier to pop the fudgesicles out once they are frozen.
  • Popsicle Sticks– I like using traditional wooden popsicle sticks.

How to make Healthy Homemade Fudgesicles:

  • Step 1– In a medium sauce pan, pour coconut milk and place on stovetop on low heat. Add chocolate chips, cacao powder, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and collagen peptides. Whisk together as chocolate chips melt and all ingredients start to dissolve and mix together. Continue to simmer for 5 minutes whisking occasionally. Make sure none of the melted chocolate is sticking to the bottom of the pot.
  • Step 2– Pour mixture into a measuring cup and let it sit until it completely cools-off. After sitting for a few minutes coconut fat may start to set and break apart from liquid. Stir mixture to make sure it’s well combined. Pour into popsicle molds then place popsicle sticks in them. Freeze for at least 6-8 hours. Preferably overnight.
  • Step 3– Remove fudgesicles from the freezer and let them sit for 10-15 minutes so that they can get a bit soft and you can easily take them out of the molds. You can also fill a large bowl with warm water and submerge the bottom of the mold into the water for a few seconds to soften fudgsicles. Keep fudgsicles in the freezer for up to 6 months.

Tips and Substitutions:

  1. Use silicone popsicle molds- These make it so easy to pop the popsicles out once they are frozen.
  2. Remove fudgesicles from the freezer and let them sit for 10-15 minutes– They will get a bit soft and you can easily take them out of the molds.
  3. Fill a large bowl with warm water and submerge the bottom of the mold– Submerging the bottom of the mold into the water for a few seconds will soften the fudgesicles making them easier to remove.
  4. Substitute for coconut milk– Use cashew milk as it is creamy and will keep fudgesicles plant-based and healthy.
  5. Substitute for cacao powder– You can use unsweetened cocoa powder.
  6. Substitute for maple syrup– You can use honey.

Variations:

  • Make them collagen fudgesicles– Swap out the cacao powder and use chocolate flavored collagen peptides.
  • Make them yogurt fudgesicles– Use plain Greek yogurt instead of coconut milk. This will add more protein too.
  • Make them protein fudgesicles– In addition to using chocolate flavored collagen peptides and plain Greek yogurt; add a scoop of protein powder.
  • Add a nice drizzle of chocolate– Melt 1 tbsp of chocolate chips with 1-2 tsp coconut oil. Drizzle melted chocolate over fudgesicles to give them a nice pretty garnish.

Healthy Homemade Fudgesicles FAQ’s:

How long do Fudgesicles last in the freezer?

Fudgesicles can be kept frozen for up to 6 months for best taste.

Storing Healthy Homemade Fudgesicles:

You can keep your healthy homemade fisgesicles in the popsicle molds you made them in. You can also remove the fudgesicles from the mold and transfer them to popsicle bags. Keep them frozen for up to 6 months.

Cacao Powder vs. Cocoa Powder:

When it comes to cacao and cocoa the two may look similar, however there is a huge and important difference between the two. Both powders are a bean that derives from the cacao plant. Cacao powder is made from fermented beans that have not been roasted. They are processed at low temperatures and then milled into a powder.

In contrast, cocoa powder is processed at much higher temperatures and often mixed and packaged with high contents of sugars and dairy. Leaving it with very little nutritional value. Cacao powder has a much bitter taste than cocoa but has a much higher nutritional content.
