Slow Cooker Carne Asada Tacos

One of my all time favorite foods have to be tacos. I mean, who doesn’t like tacos? Seriously, I can’t think of anyone! Tacos are just amazing and so delicious. They make for an easy dinner any day of the week!

These Slow Cooker Carne Asada Tacos are so tender, juicy, and flavorful. They are street style tacos made right at home with little effort. Plus, all ingredients are all much cleaner than those that may be used at a food truck.

I love making these tacos for any game day. They’re great to make for Sunday football. Just marinade your steak, place it in your slow cooker and let it do it’s thing. Once the steak is ready, assemble your tacos and go to town!

Ingredients needed to make Slow Cooker Carne Asada Tacos:

  • Flank Steak– You can also use other cuts of beef like skirt steak, flap steak, or trimmed beef brisket.
  • Coconut Aminos– For that umami taste.
  • Lime Juice– Elevates all the flavors.
  • Spices and Herbs– Oregano, cumin, chili powder, pink sea salt, black pepper, and paprika.
  • Aromatics– Garlic and yellow onion.
  • Beef Bone Broth– I like using bone broth for the added nutrition. You can also use regular beef broth or any other preferred broth like chicken or vegetable.
  • For Serving– White Onion, Cilantro, Gluten-Free Tortillas, Lime Wedges

Equipment needed to make Slow Cooker Carne Asada Tacos:

  • Slow Cooker– A medium-sized slow cooker works perfectly.
  • Measuring Cup or Small Bowl– To mix together ingredients for marinade.
  • Large Mixing Bowl– To prep the steak in.

How to make Slow Cooker Carne Asada Tacos:

  • Step 1– Mince garlic and place in a small mixing bowl. Drizzle coconut aminos and lime juice, sprinkle oregano, cumin, chili powder, paprika, pink sea salt, black pepper, and whisk all together. Rub marinade on flank steak making sure the whole cut is well coated.
  • Step 2– Place steak in slow cooker. Rough chop onion and add to slow cooker over flank steak. Pour broth over everything.
  • Step 3– Cover slow cooker and set on high. Let it cook for 3 hours.
  • Step 4– At this point, turn setting to low and let it cook for another hour. Once steak is cooked, use two forks to shred steak into thin slices. The steak will be so tender it will easily shred as you pull it apart. Keep steak in slow cooker on warm setting while you get tacos ready.
  • Step 5– Turn stove on medium-high heat. Place each tortilla on fire for 20-30 seconds. Turn over using tongs and do the same. Repeat for every tortilla you are using.
  • Step 6– Place tortilla on plate, layer steak and top with diced white onion and fresh cilantro. Garnish with lime wedge.

Slow Cooker Carne Asada Tacos FAQ’s:

What cut of beef is used to make carne asada?

To make carne asada you want to use a cut that is flavorful and preferably tender. This recipe calls for flank steak since it’s pretty easy to find (don’t need to go to the butcher section) and it captures a lot of flavor and gets pretty tender. Especially when slow cooked in the Crockpot. Alternatively, other cuts of beef you can use are skirt steak, flap steak, or trimmed beef brisket.

How long does carne asada need to be cooked for?

It depends on what method you use to make carne asada. For tacos, I like my carne asada to be juicy and tender. Which is why I like to slow cook it. It usually takes 3-4 hours to slow cook. If you’re grilling it, it will take less than 5 minutes (beef cooks fast). It may take a little more if you don’t like any pink on the inside. When grilling, I suggest letting it marinade for at least two hours. The more it sits marinating, the more flavorful it will get.

Can I make these Slow Cooker Carne Asada in the Instant Pot instead?

Yes! You can certainly use your Instant Pot to make these Carne Asada Tacos. Follow all of the instructions the same and just set the Instant Pot on pressure cook and cook your steak for 5 minutes. Release pressure and remove steak from IP. Slice and serve!

Meal Prepping it:

This recipe is great to add to your meal plan for the week. It’s perfect for meal prep too as it just cooks in the crockpot for a few hours. Make it ahead and store in the fridge and serve when ready. It’s great to make for Taco Tuesday!

Storing and Reheating:

If you have any leftover carne asada or make it ahead of time (hello meal prep!) place in Tupperware. Seal it tightly and keep it refrigerated for up to 3-4 days. Reheat in the microwave or on stovetop.

Can you freeze Slow Cooker Carne Asada Tacos?

Yes. You can freeze the carne asada by placing it in a freezer bag or freezer friendly container. Keep steak frozen for up to 2-3 months. Thaw-out in the fridge overnight to defrost. Reheat on stovetop or on the microwave.
