What Are Overnight Oats and Guide To Creating Your Own
If you have been around The Peachee Pear for a while now then you know how much I love and swear by Overnight Oats. It literally takes no more than five minutes to put together, then you stick them in the fridge overnight. In the morning, you have a complete and balanced breakfast with little effort. A healthy and delicious breakfast even if you’re running late for work or school.
What are exactly are Overnight Oats?
Overnight Oats are a nutrient dense breakfast consisting of mixing together old fashioned oats, milk, and chia seeds. You can then add any other ingredients to give it flavor and add some sweetness. They’re meant to be a healthy and quick on-the-go breakfast. They come together in less than five minutes and no need to cook them. You just leave them in the fridge overnight and the next morning you grab them and go. Healthy and nutritious breakfast even if you’re super busy.
How did I learn about them?
I first came across overnight oats on Instagram about six years ago when I started my own road to a healthier lifestyle. I started following several healthy food accounts as well as fitness coaches and a few of them would share and talk about overnight oats and how great they were. They sounded pretty interesting to me so I started doing more research online and on Pinterest. I decided to try them out and have been making them since then.
They’re my go to breakfast especially when I know I will have a busy morning the next day. Now that I have my own blog I love to come up with different variations and flavors to keep them fun and new. The possibilities are virtually endless and you can use many different ingredients to make your own unique flavors. That’s what I love so much about them.
What are the main ingredients to make overnight oats?
The main ingredients you will need are old fashioned oats also known as rolled oats, milk of choice, chia seeds, and fruit for flavor and sweetness like a banana. Make sure that you use old fashioned or rolled oats to make your overnight oats. Some people use instant oatmeal to make their overnight oats and prefer it this way.
However, old fashioned oats are less processed and will give you a less mushy consistency after they set in the fridge overnight. Because instant oatmeal is much more processed, they make more of a porridge texture when they set overnight since these oats are meant to cook faster. Also, old fashioned oats are easier to digest and have more of their natural nutrients present like fiber.
How long can you keep overnight oats in the fridge?
If you’re using just oats, milk and chia seeds, you can keep them in your fridge for up to 3-5 days. If they have fruit or any other ingredients keep them in the fridge for 1-2 days.
Can you eat them hot?
You can certainly eat your overnight oats hot. The purpose of these oats is to have the convenience factor of only having to take them out of the fridge and go. However, if you prefer them warm, pop the in the microwave for 30 seconds to a minute tops.
