Homemade Chocolate Oat Milk
Oat milk is the new trendy milk that everyone is raving about. Although oat milk seems to be something new, it’s really not. It’s been around for years. My grandmother actually used to make oat milk for us as kids. It’s quite refreshing, very creamy and nutrient dense. It’s also a great alternative to dairy and nut milks.
Our first encounter with chocolate oat milk was just over a year ago in Iceland. We went to a local grocery store to look for chocolate milk for Emma. When I first saw chocolate oat milk I was intrigued. As a kid I had had oat milk my grandmother used to make for us but never a chocolate option. I figured we would give it a try since we didn’t have many more options. This seemed to be the healthiest option as well.
Emma loved the milk and honestly, I did too. It was super tasty and very creamy. When we got back to the states I got back to making my Homemade Chocolate Nut Milk for her. One day as I was food shopping at Whole Foods I came across the same exact brand of chocolate oat milk we had tried in Iceland. I brought it home and since then that’s the only chocolate milk Emma loves.
While this is a delicious milk, like any other store bought milks, it doesn’t have the cleanest ingredients and contains a lot of sugar. So I finally came around making my own. Not to mention how expensive this chocolate oat milk is. Especially when comparing to how much it costs to make it at home. Once you make this Homemade Chocolate Oat Milk, you will never go back to store-bought again.

What is Oat Milk?
Oat milk is exactly that, milk made out of oats. Oat milk is great for kids or anyone who has food allergies or intolerance. For those who are dairy-free, vegan, or lactose intolerant, nut milks can be a great option. However, many kids and adults are allergic to nuts. So oat milk is a great substitute for these.
What kind of oats should you use to make Oat Milk:
To make oat milk I highly suggest using rolled or old fashioned oats. These kind of oats are much less processed than quick oats or instant oats. Therefore they’re much easier to digest. I highly suggest getting gluten-free oats as well. Steel cut oats are also much less processed but typically take longer to cook so may not be the best option to make this milk.
How long can I keep my Chocolate Oat Milk in the fridge for?
Keeping your Chocolate Oat Milk in a mason jar will keep it fresh in the fridge. You can keep your milk refrigerated for up to 5-7 days. Make sure to shake before serving each time as it tends to set a bit.
What you need to make this Chocolate Oat Milk:
Ingredients:
- Gluten-Free Rolled Oats
- Cacao Powder
- Dates
- Pink Salt
- Vanilla Extract
- Filtered Water
Equipment:
- High Speed Blender
- Large Mixing Bowl
- Nut Bag
- Large Wide Mouth Mason Jar
How to make Chocolate Oat Milk:
- Layer ingredients in a high speed blender; oats, cacao powder, dates, vanilla extract, and pink salt. Pour in water and place lid on blender making sure it’s tightly closed. Blend for 30-45 seconds until smooth texture is reached.
- Place nut bag (or a clean kitchen towel if you don’t have a nut bag) over large mixing bowl. Start pouring blended oat milk into nut bag. Pour 1/3 of the milk into the bag. Close bag and squeeze bag from the middle down putting in as much strength as possible. Try to squeeze as much liquid as possible leaving pulp inside the bag very dry. Repeat with another 1/3 of the milk. Then again with remaining milk until all milk has been put through nut bag. Discard leftover pulp left in nut bag.
- Pour milk in a large wide mouth mason jar. Keep chocolate oat milk refrigerated for up to 5-7 days. Chocolate oat milk is best when served chilled. Enjoy!
Tips and Substitutions:
- Use Nut Bag to make chocolate oat milk- A nut bag is the best option to make homemade oat milk or any homemade nut milk. It’s easy to use and leaves milk very smooth and creamy.
- No nut bag?- No problem, use a clean kitchen towel, cheese cloth or coffee filters.
- Try to squeeze as much liquid as possible- Pulp inside the bag should be very dry after squeezing liquid out.
- Substitute for cacao powder- Use unsweetened cocoa powder.
- Substitute for dates- Use any sweeter of choice like maple syrup or honey.
How to store your Chocolate Oat Milk:
Pour your milk into a large wide mouth mason jar. I find this is the best way to store either nut milks or oat milk. They stay fresh longer and the taste stays the same for days. Just make sure you shake your jar every time you’re going to pour yourself a glass of milk. Keep your Chocolate Oat Milk refrigerated for up to 5-7 days.
