These Sweet Potato Fritters with Yogurt Dip are so great for toddlers and kids. They are sweet and rich in so many nutrients. These fritters are perfect to get a serving of both veggies and fruit for your little one. They are also so fun to make and to eat.

The Yogurt Dip is so creamy with a hint of sweetness and a bit sour. Compliments the fritters perfectly and makes them even more fun for the kids to enjoy. Kids, especially toddlers love having foods that they can dip.

Although this recipe was developed with the intention of it being finger food for kids, it doesn’t mean adults can’t enjoy them. They are great for the whole family to enjoy. These fritters make for such a nutritious and delicious food!

Ingredients needed to make Sweet Potato Fritters:

  • Sweet Potato– I use regular sweet potatoes but you can use purple too.
  • Bananas– Use ripe bananas with brown spots for sweeter sweet potato fritters.
  • Oat Flour– Be sure to use certified gluten-free oat flour.
  • Cinnamon– Adds flavor.
  • For Yogurt Dip– Plain Greek yogurt, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and maple syrup.

Equipment needed to make Sweet Potato Fritters:

  • Griddle or Large Cast Iron Skillet– Best surfaces to cook fritters on.
  • Large Mixing Bowl– To mix all of your ingredients for sweet potato fritters.
  • Small Mixing Bowl– To mix ingredients for yogurt dip.
  • Spatula– I suggest using a silicone spatula.

How to make Sweet Potato Fritters with Yogurt Dip:

  • Step 1– Peel and grate sweet potato. Place grated sweet potato in a cheese cloth, dish towel or paper towel. Firmly squeeze to get rid of as much liquid as possible.
  • Step 2– Peel and place bananas in a large mixing bowl. Using a fork or spoon to mash bananas. Add in egg and whisk together. Toss in the rest of ingredients; grated sweet potato, oat flour, cinnamon, and vanilla extract. Whisk again until well combined.
  • Step 3– Turn griddle on medium-high heat and grease with coconut oil. Bring to a heat.
  • Step 4– Using a spoon, start scooping out mixture and form balls that are about 3-4 inches. Place on heated surface and push down carefully with a spatula to flatten it and form a fritter. Fry fritters until golden on each side (about 3-4 minutes per side).
  • Step 5– While fritters are frying, combine all of the ingredients for yogurt dip in a small mixing bowl; Greek yogurt, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and maple syrup. Whisk together until well combined and smooth and creamy texture is reached.
  • Step 6– Serve fritters while still warm along with yogurt dip. Enjoy!

Tips and Substitutions:

  1. Don’t skip squeezing out as much liquid as possible from sweet potatoes-This will reduce the amount of excess moisture and allow for the fritters to be easily shaped and to get crunchy on the outside when pan fried.
  2. Use ripe bananas with brown spots– These bananas have a higher sugar content which will add natural sweetness to your sweet potato fritters.
  3. Use a griddle if you don’t have a cast iron skillet- A griddle works great too when pan frying.
  4. Switch up your sweet potatoes– You can also use purple sweet potatoes for a cool color. Butternut squash or pumpkin would be great substitutes.
  5. Substitute for oat flour– You can use tapioca flour to keep these gluten-free.
  6. Substitute for maple syrup– You can use honey.
  7. This recipe is meant to be for infants and toddlersSpices are kept to a minimum for this reason. If you would like to make these for older kids and/or adults, feel free to add more spices to your liking.

Variations:

  1. Add more spices– Add some ground cloves or ground nutmeg for more flavor.
  2. Make savory– Omit using banana, cinnamon and vanilla extract to add more of a savory flavor.
  3. Add fresh herbs– Dill, parsley or oregano are great to make these more savory.
  4. Use other veggies– You can use other vegetables to make these such as butternut squash or pumpkin.

How to serve Sweet Potato Fritters:

We love serving these Sweet Potato Fritters with a creamy and sweet Yogurt Dip that perfectly compliments them. It’s made with plain Greek yogurt, maple syrup, cinnamon and vanilla extract. You can also top these with some cinnamon and a drizzle of maple syrup or honey.

Sweet Potato Fritters FAQ’s:

Why are my fritters not crispy?

If your sweet potato fritters are not crispy it is because your batter is too wet. This too is a result from there being too much liquid in your batter. Again, make sure you squeeze the excess liquid out from your grated sweet potatoes.

Can I make sweet potato fritters ahead of time?

Yes you can make sweet potato fritters ahead of time. Place sweet potato fritters in an airtight container or a zip bag. Keep fritters refrigerated for up to 4-5 days.

Do I need to peel the sweet potatoes before making the fritters?

I would recommend peeling your sweet potatoes before making your fritters. I personally don’t like sweet potato skin when it’s pan fried. If you are ok with this, you can keep the skin on. I would recommend washing and scrubbing sweet potatoes well before preparing them for your fritters.

Meal prepping it:

These fritters are great for meal pep! They only call for a few ingredients and are ready in just a few steps. They’re great to make for your toddler’s breakfast or lunches for the week ahead. You can even freeze some and have a small stash for busy days!

How to store and reheat Sweet Potato Fritters:

Place sweet potato fritters in an airtight container or a zip bag. Keep fritters refrigerated for up to 4-5 days. To reheat place back on heated surface such as griddle or skillet. You can also reheat in the oven. I wouldn’t reheat in the microwave because this can make sweet potato fritters a bit mushy.

Can Sweet Potato Fritters be frozen?

You can certainly freeze these Sweet Potato Banana Fritters. They hold up in the freezer for up to 1 month. Place fritters in a freezer bag or silicone bag. I like to place a piece of parchment paper between them before placing them in a bag and in the freezer. This prevents them from getting stuck to each other once they get frozen. Keep sweet potato fritters frozen for up to 2-3 months. To thaw out, just place in the fridge overnight. Reheat on stovetop or even in the oven.

These are 2 of my favorite things to eat lately, bananas and sweet potatoes! Do the bananas need to be really ripe or should they be harder?

    1. Bananas and sweet potatoes are the best! I do prepfer ripe bananas because they’re sweeter so they make these more tasty. But using harder ones should be fine as long as you mash them well.
